How to Make a Holga Splitzer

I know a lot of people who prefers the Diana instead of a Holga just for the sake of wizz bang features/add-ons/hacks. Diana got lots of lens adaptor, splitzer and even a polaroid back. Well F**k that. Yeah it may be cool but I don’t wanna shell out $$$ for a feature that I won’t really use.

Here comes Holga's answer for the Splitzer. There have been a lot of "modifications" available for a Holga making it the "Frankenstein" of all toy cameras. This this one I assure you is non-destructive.

First tip when you bought your Holga is to ditch the lens cap. Its easy to forget to take it off, and in my case, in my first few rolls I stupidly wasted almost half the roll because of this. But who says it's totally useless?

To make a Holga Splitzer, all you need is that cap and 2 minutes of your time! Yes, that's just freaking 2 minutes! (and some band-aid if you're a clutz)

You will need;

The Cap

Cutter

Errmm… that’s all. And here’s what you do;

Step-1

Cut it in half (that’s the first and final step)

Finished

And here are the results;

Half Me

Need More Practice

Lame Attempt at Half Body Shot

Needless to say, I need more practice in guesstimating the vanishing point, but hey if I say so myself the first self portrait was on the spot Smile with tongue out

Holga + Orchard Road

I hate Monday. Don’t you hate Monday? I do.

Nothing can ever put me in a sour mood except Monday. Perhaps because I spend the weekends sleeping late and waking late and only getting up when I feel bedsore, and not eating meals  not because I’m not hungry but because I’m too lazy to cook and there is nothing to cook anyway. I can’t do that on Monday, because on Monday I have to get up early and be at work early, you know, starting the week right. My brain is hardwired to that silly superstition that what to do on Monday sets the whole week’s mood. So If I’m late on Monday, It’ll be a tardy whole week, so forth and so on. So yeah I hate Monday.

I only half like Friday and Sunday. Its Saturday I like more, and Holiday the most (because you’re supposed to work but not going too)

Speaking of Friday, here are some Holga prints for that last Bulbing Session.

Bulbing Session

Last night I took more pictures on my Holga than my dSLR. When I downloaded my the pictures in my PC I realized I only took 31 shots. I might have taken more but I usually delete the unwanted ones.

I shot 2 rolls of 120 films. That’s 24 prints, and that’s a lot in Holga Standards.

Holga Bokeh

My 2 1/2 year old Holga is enjoying itself sitting on top of a tripod.

I learned the basics of photography with it actually. It’s got a focal point of 60mm (supposedly) aperture of shutter speed of 1:8 (apparently) and f/13 (presumably). But really it is more like guesswork. Due to the uncoupled lens and view finder, the focal point becomes merely a “reference” for focusing. One must shoot with the “centre slightly to the right”. Shutter speed is fixed but you can keep it open to infinity and beyond with bulb mode. The aperture is a joke. It’s supposed to have Cloudy (f/13) and Sunny (f/20) but it is really just an added decoration.

I always get weird pictures, but never unwanted ones. My Holga have a mind and mood of its own.

Chasing Flying Pigeons II

I am archiving my images so save my bloated hard disk, and guess what? I found out that I’ve been chasing flying pigeons for a long time!

At last Holy Ghost month has ended. No more spooky Chinese Puppet theaters. No more blaring Getai shows. I can sleep in peace.

Manila LRTs - Photos of Distance Travelled

Shots taken in different LRT stations in Philippines with my beat up Holga 120 and various slide films

Between travelling by sea and air. I’d prefer the sea, but when it comes to land transportation, I go hands down with trains. It can burrow underground moving through the claustrophobic walls of concrete. Sometimes it runs along the ground racing against the EDSA traffic. Most of the time it moves through the city above roofs with sweeping panoramic panoramic view of the Manila skyline.Its like neither here or there and I like being in between.

This is One of Those Thingeys

Un-officially this is my 7th will. ( I write them at least once a year when I can't think of anything to write about) As usual, I am just trying to copy/paste from my previous wills and snip some of details here and there. I wanted it to be dramatic but i'm not in the mood tonight, I'm feeling rather morbid instead. I wanted it to be long but I don't have lots of stuffs to leave to people and I only have a couple of people that I want to leave stuffs to.

I leave my gadgets to my siblings. My laptop to my Jess, my cellphone to Joyce, my digicam to Ann and.... oh that's basically it. Uhh, My clothes to an orphanage. I like the idea of helping people by giving them stuffs that I don't need anymore. I look generous instead of, well, dead. I'm not sure if an orphanage is willing to take clothes of a dead man but hey, it's the thought that counts. My books to a library, if ever they're interested in weird fantasy novels.

Anyhoo April is Cancer Awareness month. My granny died of cancer, I have an uncle who died of it, and last year a very close aunt succumed to it too.I'm not wishing of getting it but if its not skipping generation, better me than someone in my family. I think i'd have a better coping mechanism if ever and besides being bald looks good on me.

I keep looking for mistakes but never get to erase anything. So I guess thats it.

Long Time No See

Last saturday took me walking around town and down the beach. Brought my Holga 120 and vivitar and a stash of films. I finished 2 rolls of B&W films (Lucky and Neopan) but unfortunately I can only get the prints on weds. The studio only process B&W every Tues and Thurs.

But I dropped by to get the cross-processed film today ( Fujichrome Tungsten 64T ) for my Vivitar, and Lo and Behold! After almost 5 months of hibernation, the wide-angled-wonder still got it!

What I like about Singapore is the closeness of everything to anywhere. I can just ride a bus and 30 mins later I'm playing in the sand.

Even locals looks like a tourist in the new Universal Studios. Entrance is NOT CHEAP though.

Also there are parks everywhere. Boardwalk near the sea and even PARK on the roof of a mall.

Another 30 minutes or less from the beach are Historical sights and architecture, like The Raffles Hotel. It's supposed to be the oldest Hotel in Singapore it and has witnessed some very important things in History -- like the invention of Singapore Sling...

Anyway, apparently any ordinary man, or even the CEO or Executive of a multi million company can't afford to stay there. They only have Presidential / Executive / Premier Suite, and the lowest room starts at US99,999 dollars. Famous personalities who stayed there were MJ, Celine Bill Gates and Clinton. The hotel is so exclusive it is even rumored they have underground tunnels/roads connecting to key establishment to avoid the paparazzi.

In Philippines, I like to be in Quiapo by day and Malate by night. I just love being in the crowd. For some strange reason, whenever I walk around without a plan, I always, ALWAYS end up at Orchard Road. Day or night, I always end up there.

Also Dairy Queen's Mudslide Blizzard (w/o nuts) is my comfort food after a long walk.

Whats In Your Bag?

I miss shooting film. Ever since I bought my first digicam a month ago, the guilty feeling of not holding my Holga never really diminished. I even tried to hide it inside the cabinet because of the feeling of neglect it emanates by just lying on my desk and gathering dust.

So today I just have to scratch the itch. Took my film cams from inactivity and loaded them up with films. I really don't have a plan where to go, but then again the best plan is having no plan.

It's a Film Orgy in there

Oh, and I also left my digicam behind and found how easy it was. Sure there were those "KodaK" moments that I missed by not having it around and the instant gratification of viewing 100+ pictures but heck, I missed the clunkiness, weirdness and even the black tape patching my Holga more.

Most of the times my digicam always gives good images in a technical point of view, but my Holga always gives the "ummph" factor.
