Things To Do In Philippines

I am on a 2 1/2 weeks sabbatical and I have decided to spend it in Philippines. Well, actually I am in between jobs and It just dawned on me that changing industry is not as easy at it seems (from travel to creative ). My enthusiasm was not enough apparently and I get easily stumped by technical questions.

Anyway, I already filled my almost 3 weeks with activities I am starting to wonder if my savings will be enough to go back to Singapore. Here are my things to do starting next week.

1. Cliff Dive at Ariel’s Point Boracay. Cliff Diving is one of my bucket list and I’ll be damned if I let the chance pass by. I am going on 27JAN for a 3days 2 night relaxation by the beach.

Ariels Point

2. JAN 28. Attend UST 400 years celebration. Nothing beats going back to your Alma Mater and hanging out to your now successful college buddies, with beer in one hand, and fireworks at the background, singing your Alma Mater Song altogether.

UST 400

3. Try the KFC Double Down. I will forsake my diet plan for 2011 for just a day.

KFC Double Downer

4. Shoot Manila Bay. I’ve never seen a better hued sunset than the one in Manila Bay

5. FEB 5. Attend Lomo Theraphy. Get together with my lomomanila.ph friends.

I just configured our wifi router today hence the late update. Kinda busy playing with Xbox Kinect too. My 9 year old sister just knocked me down twice in boxing.

Stories of Geylang - SIN of Singapore

Geylang 004

I live in the heart of Geylang. For the uninitiated, the SIN in Singapore probably comes from Geylang area, specifically Sins carnal in nature. But for me it is the most interesting place in Singapore. What I like about Geylang is the stark contrast of glossy-magazine version of Singapore you see in most places. The streets are dusty, the back alleys are dark, the walls are smelly and people actually sleep on the paved sidewalks.

Geylang 008

This is not to say Geylang is a slum area, there are no slum areas in Singapore mind you, and neither it is neglected. It just emits a character of its own that keeps manifesting in spite of the government effort to clean it up. During day time it is merely a collective rows of colonial style shop houses, either renovated or rented but looks dilapidated. Traffic is always heavy at the main road, but the back lanes are always lonely. At night though, is a different story. Neon signs begins to flicker, flashes and eventually flares up, the scent of talcum powder and perfume mingles with the sweat of foreign workers coming back from hard days work.

Geylang 001

Geylang  is the epitome of split personality. At the background, Buddhist temples and religious associations line one side which is juxtaposed with love hotels, massage parlors and KTV clubs just across the street. I once bumped into a monk and a Chinese girl in skimpy skirt on the same street (but not at the same time) both of them eyeing me as I utter my excuses, the former with irritation and the latter with flirty intents. Now the lanes are lined with foreign workers. contractors from India and Pakistan idling in the corner, eye-fucking the street walkers.

Geylang 006

These street walkers are not your usual prostitutes in Malate or Angeles, these are world class quality that can pass as models in any country.  With their long legs, smooth skin and fake eyelashes. Different Lorongs (lanes/street) represents different countries. Lorong 10-12 have Chinese nationals, (SGD100.00+) in their cocktail dresses lined up like fruit stands ready for your picking. Lorong 14-16 have the petite but aggressive Indonesians and Burmese (SGD50.00), pulling you and rubbing their bodies to your elbows. Lorong 18-20 are Vietcong territories, some say they're budget meal Chinese (SGD 50.00)

Street walker: "come with me lah"
Me: No thanks (shyly)
Street walker: "Don't thank me lah, fuck me lah"

One can see rows and rows of houses with odd number houses at Lorong 20-24 these are the massage parlor territory, where the pimp's sales pitch is "shower, massage, blowjob,f uckjob 80 dallah onli!" Prostitution is legal here, it is like the Amsterdam of Asia. Like ice cream the best sellers depend per season, sometimes it is Thai, on some days Chinese or Vietnamese.

Geylang 012

In the darkest backstreets with no name are the tyrannies, bigger than you and me but with exotic beauty that can rival the Thais. Even Indian girls in sari joins the fray on some nights.

But that is not all at Geylang. There are lots of hawker centers and eateries scattered all over the the district, most are open 24 hours, and will readily cater to the different cultures working overnight with their alternate careers. The main road is a delight of gastronomical proportions for one with exotic tastes. Herbal Chicken soup? Fried Frogs? Sautéed Snails? Turtle Soup, anybody? How about Durian, the pungy smelly spiky fruit which is native to the Malay peninsula? They say it is creamy and sweet but it is also an acquired taste. It smells like a drunk man's puke.

Geylang 005

The night usually ends at 2Am for the massage parlors, and at 4am the street walkers take their breakfast (or perhaps dinner) at the eateries. I was once approached while eating my cheesy fries at the eatery below my apartment. She speaks limited English and we managed by hand signals;

Streetwalker: (opens the mouth, miming blowjob) 30 dollars, can?
Me: No, I live upstairs.
Streetwalker: (pulled my hand) I tell you fortune (then speaks rapidly in Chinese)
Me: I don't have money
Streetwalker: Buy me coffee

I bought her a cup and retired upstairs.

This is my Sunday Like

1. Woke up at 12NN

2. Fried Hotdog for lunch (I still have to but groceries for that Jamie Oliver’s app)

3. Decided to watch Japanese movies on my bed at 2PM.

I just realized Japanese films just like Awkward Silence in their films. I often find myself wanting to skip a scene because of this. What’s up with 45 seconds of staring, sitting beside each other, or generally doing nothing on the same frame?

Anyway, I watched these movies

How To Date an Otaku

Time_Traveller-the_girl_who_leapt_through_time

gigolo wannabe

4. 8PM and still at it.

I was just browsing through the titles, I wanted the weirdest, funniest titles at www.mysoju.com but some links are not working. I wanted to watch a comedy movie, but the damn Titles are misleading. The above three all have sad ending. Either the love one died, went to the states, or realized the relationship is too good to be true. Either way, they got separated and ended without the “happily ever after” factor.

So I resorted to my favorite Japanese Movie

Water Boys

First time I’ve watched this in 2005, my I almost had a locked jaw because of laughter.

5. 10.30 ish fixed my dinner. Nutella with crushed wafers. (My own recipe) Nomnomnom

TGIF Random Thoughts

Here's a little confession, It's been years since I seen The Ring The Movie and up until now I’m still haunted by that scene where the lady brushes her long black hair in front of the mirror.

The Ring

It's not having any sense at all but everytime I remember that, I have to watch a cartoon movie or any movie with talking animals in it to stop my imagination from killing me. At one time, I had to sing a Barry Manilow song over and over again to stop my brain from thinking that freaking woman brushing her goddamn hair in front of that f**ing mirror!

I am not particularly scared in Exorcist movies or any other horror movies, really. I only get frightened when suddenly, out of the blue, I imagine that woman while watching a horror movie. And this happens a lot.

That's why I love Finding Nemo, I love how color orange and blue cheers me up and I cannot- even in my wildest and morbid imagination insert in my head that creepy scene in an under-the-sea cartoon movie. It will take a lot of brainwork to do that.

Finding-Nemo

I also found out that singing I Can't Smile Without You over and over can shoo away all the demons inside my head

Game Plan 2011

Tomorrow will be 2011 and I am already referring this year as “last year”. I am that excited. As much as I want to say that having New Years resolution is so cliché’ I still end up having (and posting) mine. After all, I started this year’s (2010)  resolution around August. So yeah, I’m a lazy procrastinator. So here are my Things To Do In 2011 and The Game Plan

1. Lose Weight

Nope, this is not a recurring NY Resolution. As a matter of fact my goal last year this year was to gain weight. My mom and friends scolded me when I went home last February with collar bone showing and sunken cheeks.  They said that I am not taking care of myself. So when I get back here, I decided to put some weight and binge. It’s not really that hard to do. Especially if you have a Hawker Center downstairs selling cheesy fries at uber cheap price. But when my girlfriend came to visit here, she noticed my obvious love handles which she called muffins, and my chest turning in to boobs. Also I noticed that all my photos are showing a noticeable double chin. Fuck.

Game Plan

I bought a Nike Shoes with that smart chip thingey that monitors the calories burned, miles covered and GPS tracking. As I can only see the results when plugged in an iphone/ipod, I also need the additional hardware. So I bought an Ipod Touch 4. So the premise is, I will be motivated to run and train because its a waste of money if i didn’t use the gadgets.

I also compulsively registered for the Sundown Marathon. I signed up for the 21K. Never mind that I have been a couch potato for the rest of the year and I still use the elevator in my 3 story apartment. At least I will be forced to train.

2. Learn to Cook

I am a self professed expert in frying and boiling foods. My current masterpieces includes boiling and frying hotdogs, frying the perfect sunny side up eggs and boiling the perfect temperature of water for nissin cup noodles and of course evenly slathering Nuttela on Gardenia. I needed to up my ante.

Game Plan

I installed this Jaime Oliver cooking app and I plan to do at least 1 recipe per week. Again the app is not free so I will be “motivated” to use it. Also I bought pots and pans and cooking wares last year when I moved place but still haven’t unpacked it yet.

3. Travel to at least 3 countries

So I’ve been to Boracay, Melaka, and Indonesia this year. (Damn my Batam Trip is still in draft mode) I am planning on going somewhere where I need to fly over. Possibly Yogyakarta, Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur.

Game Plan

I finished paying my credit card dues and I think its time to max it out again. I will grab seats when there is a ticket sale, regardless if I have a travel companion or not. And I will apply for visa right away. No backing up. I was not ready for the Paris Sale ticket from Air Asia, so I gotta get even next year.

4. Shoot More Film

I bought 2 digital cameras this year. The Canon G11 that only lasted for 4  1/2 months (it went swimming on it’s own) and my current Nikon D3000. I haven’t been going out with my Holga and Vivitar underwater cams and I still have a lots of films undeveloped. I really really miss their unpredictability and artistic outputs, especially now that there are a lot of “apps” out there purportedly giving the same results. Its like piracy. If you want the effects, buy a goddamn real camera.

Game Plan

Set up a blog and stick with it. HolgaProject365 starts on January 1. I already have 31 days ready pictures I took this month to be posted all through out January.

Pano 1

5. New Industry

I feel like a robot now, the work is like a routine everyday. I don’t even see myself moving forward or backwards in my career. It is so sad. I became a travel agent because I thought I can travel, but it is the complete opposite. Instead, I am stuck at the office convincing clients to take this or that airlines, routes, itinerary etc. when I, myself haven’t been there. It is so fake.

Game Plan

Resign. And I did. My last day is on January 20. I already passed my resumes to creative, events and consultancy agencies. I am confident in my skills and I am a fast learner. I am techy if I may say so, and am familiar with the basics of HTML, and website designs. I think it is time for me to turn my hobby into something productive. Wish me luck on that.

Xmas Partey! 001

So there, Happy New Year y’all and Hope you fulfil your new years resolution too!
